Abstract:

Introduction & Objective: Oral submucous fibrosis is a chronic debilitating disease and a well-recognized potentially premalignant condition of the oral cavity, various medical and surgical modalities have been used but results are not satisfactory owing to recurrence, adverse effects and some worsening condition. The objective of the study is to evaluate the role of an herbal preparation in the grade-I and grade-II and recalcitrant cases of oral submucous fibrosis and its consequent improvement in trismus and mouth opening and reduction in burning sensation and also to assess the changes in the levels of serum IL-6 and serum antioxidants after administration of the preparation both topically and systemically.

Method: The study comprised of minimum 30 patients having OSMF aged from 16 and up to 60 years attending the OPD of Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dental Sciences, King George's Medical University, Lucknow. The patients were enrolled in the study irrespective of sex, caste and creed. An informed consent was being taken from the patient. It was an open-label randomized clinical trial comprising of holistic Ayurvedic approach a clinical trial comprised of 30 patients of clinically diagnosed cases of OSMF. Herbal preparation was made and given to the patients for oral rinse and gargle for 3-5 minutes twice a day for 4 months.

Results: Clinical evaluation was done every 15 days. Pre and post interventional evaluation of biochemical parameter, serum antioxidant, IL6 was done, there was marked improvement in clinical as well as biochemical parameters.

Conclusion: The herbal preparations are very effective in management of early stage of submucous fibrosis as well for the prevention of the submucous fibrosis which is very common in India and potential pre malignant lesion.

Title: Applications of nanotechnology in dentistry
Speaker
Biography:

Omid Panahi, Graduated from Centro Escolar University on 2013 in field of Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), and MSc Oral and maxillofacial surgery at Yeditepe University, Istanbul, Turkey. He has published more than 45 papers in reputed journals and has been serving as an editorial board member of isi journals. Research are; oral surgery, stem cell, regenerative dentistry.

Abstract:

In last few decades, nanotechnology became prominent in medical sciences, especially in dentistry, including the treatment and prevention of oral and dental disease using nano-sciences. Therefore an understanding of Nanotechnology is essential to further understanding how these materials can be used in  Dentistry. Further, various modern nanotechnology products and new therapies are on the way. This study discusses the latest advances of nanotechnology in dentistry, including nano-based oral and dental technologies being the major improvements in Restorative dentistry (nano-composites, nanoresin modified GIC, nano-GIC, Mineral Solutions), in Prosthodontics (nano-hybrid composites),  in Endodontics (sealers), in Periodontics (Grafts, nano-materials for tissue regeneration), in Oral Implantology (nanonite implant), and in Orthodontics (nanorobots, archwires). With the development of nanotechnology and the use of nano-materials in dentistry, it will eventually improve the quality of lifes of millions of persons by improving examinations and medical and dental treatments with new technologies.

Abstract:

Introduction & Objective: Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most prevalent malignancy of the mouth which includes more than 90% of oral cancers. LAMP3 is a member of LAMP family and dendritic cell marker located on its membrane. Recent studies showed high expression of this gene in esophageal SCC, head and neck SCC and also cancer of breast, digestive tract and cervix. The objective of this study was to evaluate the expression of LAMP3 gene in oral squamous cell carcinoma and dysplastic oral epithelium by Real-time reverse transcription polymerase (RT-PCR) and also comparing of LAMP3 expression between grade I, II, III OSCC with each other and with dysplastic epithelium.
Method: In this study, 60 samples of squamous cell carcinoma and dysplastic epithelium of oral cavity obtained from the archive of oral and maxillofacial Pathology Department of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences together with their corresponding age and gender information. At the beginning total RNA from all the specimens obtained and gene expression evaluated by Real-time PCR.
Results: In this study 60 sample from 60 patients including 33 female (55%) 27 male (45%) with mean age of 57.7 year and extent of 23-84 years old were evaluated quantitatively for LAMP3 gene expression for grades I, II, III OSCC and dysplastic epithelium result showed that there have been significant difference between different grades of OSCC and dysplastic epithelium. The mean expression of LAMP3 between each grade of OSCC show that grade III had high expression in comparison with grade I, II and dysplastic epithelium and it was almost two times that of grade I and II and also mean expression was lowest in dysplastic epithelium comparing with the OSCC, but there have not been significant difference between grade I and II. The average expression of LAMP3 was higher in OSCC than dysplastic group (p<0.001).
Conclusion: According to our results, higher expression of LAMP3 from dysplastic epithelium to OSCC indicates the process of carcinogenesis in oral mucosa. In higher grades of OSCC with lower differentiation, LAMP3 expression is increasing, so that LAMP3 mRNA in OSCC grade III was higher than OSCC grade I and II.

Abstract:

Dental implants rehabilitations are the most  prefered method of tooth replacement in modern dentistry. Vertical and horizontal  bone deficiencies are the major obstacles of this treatment. Surgical principles of  vertical  and bone grafting, such as stabilization of grafts, space maintenance, and proper wound closure are fort coming points for success.  But determining the most appropriate surgical method for the augmentation of horizontal or vertical insufficiency is the key stone of  the treatment success.
